Codicote Winter/Spring 2018

Classes Suspended

Unfortunately we have had to suspend all our scheduled fortnightly classes at Codicote Stotfold and Ware due to Anne requiring knee surgery. Don't worry though, after some time convalescing she will be back fitter than ever by the summer and will resume all classes in September.

Unlike other art classes we don't ask you to buy a long list of expensive items. Instead we provide you with everything that you will need to complete each class making it a great deal easier for you to follow along. So, no having to worry about adjusting what we are doing to suit your own colours, brushes and paper.

We limit the number attending each of our classes to twelve to allow sufficient time and space for you to work. This means that places must be booked in advance to avoid disappointment on the day. The cost of each class is £15 and payment is at the beginning of each class (cash please as we are unable to take cards).

So if you feel like coming along what do you do? To book a place email Anne on anne@theartbox.co.uk or give us a call on 01438 318398 (we have an answerphone and will always ring you back).

Each class lasts 2½ hours and there is always a break for free tea and coffee and the all important custard cream or maybe bourbon biscuit.

Winter Vegetables - Watercolour

  • Wed Jan 10 1:00 to 3:30

Winter vegetables have many interesting shapes and textures which as artists we can use to help us show all three dimensions. Using those textures and shadow in our paintings we will aim to make the vegetables look like they could be picked up right from the page.

Elephant on the Savannah - Watercolour

  • Wed Jan 24 1:00 to 3:30

The photograph we are working from shows a juvenile elephant striding across dried grassland. We will represent the criss-cross leathery pattern on its skin using a rigger brush and a weak solution of elephant colour paint. This technique can produce a stunning effect when completed. Thanks once again to Rosemarie for one of her safari pictures.

Church Street, Ware - Watercolour

  • Wed Feb 7 1:00 to 3:30

This scene is of a doctors surgery in one of the backstreets of Ware. As the building is taller than it is wide we will break the “rules” by painting it in portrait rather than landscape format. When using photographs as our source material we can also break the “rules” by omitting things to improve the composition. In this case a very prominent and distracting road sign will be left out.

Crocuses in a Pot - Watercolour

  • Wed Feb 21 1:00 to 3:30

When we see the beautiful colours of the crocus appearing in garden planters and hedgerows we know that spring is finally on its way. In this class we will be painting crocus flowers that have been grown in pots to allow us to paint from “life” rather than photographs.

Stone Steps at Appleby - Watercolour

  • Wed Mar 7 1:00 to 3:30

This picture has everything an artist could ask for - old wood, foliage and textured walls. There is lots for us to get our teeth into even though it is quite a simple scene. Different greens for the foliage, cracks in the wooden post and splatter for the textured wall – great fun! Thanks to Colin for his wonderful photo which I've had for a little while just waiting for the right moment.

Fungi and Leaves - Pen and Wash

  • Wed Mar 21 1:00 to 3:30

This is an opportunity to use our pens again to give shape to the painting. The fungi we are working on are small cap mushrooms nestling in grass with dried leaves around them. The photograph was given to me by Chrissie who saw them and thought that it would make a good class, thanks Chrissie!
