The Art Box

Stotfold Spring/Summer 2017

Unlike many other art classes you see advertised, we don't ask you to buy a long list of expensive items. Instead we provide you with everything that you will need to complete each class. It's then a great deal easier for you to follow along as we are all using the same materials. So, no having to worry about adjusting what we are doing to suit your own colours, brushes and paper.

We limit the number attending each of our classes to twelve to allow sufficient time and space for you to work. This means that places must be booked in advance to avoid disappointment on the day. The cost of each class is £15 and payment is at the beginning of each class (cash please as we are unable to take cards).

So if you feel like coming along what do you do? To book a place email Anne on or give us a call on 01438 318398 (we have an answerphone and will always ring you back).

Each class lasts 2½ hours and there is always a break for free tea and coffee and the all important custard cream or maybe bourbon biscuit.

Purple Sprouting Broccoli - Watercolour

  • Tue Apr 25 7:00 to 9:30

I have been wanting to run a class on painting Purple Sprouting Broccoli for a while now. So as it is now in season... As it's name suggests the broccoli heads are purple in colour and as my palette doesn't contain purple we will have to mix it. The question is which red and blue do we use?

Three Geese in a Row - Watercolour

  • Tue May 9 7:00 to 9:30

Following the success of my geese painting, which was used on the front cover of The Stevenage Magazine, I have been asked many times to hold a class painting white geese. So how do you paint white geese? The trick is in using colour in the shadows to make the geese look “real”.

Italian Arches in Sepia - Watercolour

  • Tue May 23 7:00 to 9:30

This is another in my series of tonal paintings – we have painted statues in grey, bridges in blue and now Italian arches in sepia. Using one colour to create a picture is a very good way to get your head around painting lights and darks. Tone is after all what watercolour painting is all about.

Fruit in a Bowl - Watercolour

  • Tue Jun 6 7:00 to 9:30

Apricots are soft round fruits with subtle shades of pale orange and red. The object of this class is to give the painted fruits a “soft”, “round” 3D appearance rather than them appear as flat objects on the page. To make the painting a bit more interesting the fruits will be sitting in a bowl which will test your skill at drawing ellipses.

Zebras at Lunch - Watercolour

  • Tue Jun 20 7:00 to 9:30

Rather than use black paint for the zebra's stripes which would produce a very “flat” painting we will mix our own dark colour. Although zebra stripes appear to be black they are in reality many different dark shades. The sharp lines of the zebra's in our photograph stand out against the blurred background of the grasses they are eating. Thanks to Rosemarie for her fantastic photograph.

Flowers in a Vase - Watercolour

  • Tue Jul 4 7:00 to 9:30

All the colours of the palette could be used in this class. Depending on the type of flowers that are available we could be painting in pinks, blues or yellows. Whatever flowers I choose we will be painting them in big bold shapes making sure that they fill up the page with colour.

Tropical Sunset - Watercolour

  • Tue Jul 18 7:00 to 9:30

As we are all off to our desert islands for the rest of the summer I thought we would tackle a tropical sunset! This subject looks straightforward – until you realise that the sky is painted in layers. The trees silhouetted against the sky make for a very atmospheric subject. Thanks again to Rosemarie for her wonderful photograph.
